The Best Warhammer 40K Games Every Fan Should Play (Part II)

Last time we discussed many awesome gaming titles that belong in the Warhammer 40k universe and even though we previously covered a lot of battlegrounds, there are still plenty of others left to be overviewed, this is why we are happy to deliver on our given promise and are bringing you the other hit games that we would recommend to check out on Steam, if you have not done so already!

This time we are planning to put the spotlight on some of the more alternative games, so let’s immediately shift our focus towards the first strategy title in the second part of our list for the best Warhammer 40K games that every fan should play at least once in their life. Let’s continue!



Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon (Classic)



Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon is a hex-based, turn-based strategy game where players are leading the Imperial forces, including the Armageddon Steel Legion and Space Marines, against a massive Ork invasion. The game features more than 30 scenarios set on the hostile planet of Armageddon, which is threatened by the brute Orks and their leader, Ghazghkull Thraka. Players can select to play through several chapters of the Space Marines, specifically the Salamanders, Blood Angels, and Ultramarines.

Released more than 10 years ago on November 26th 2014, by the combined efforts of Flashback Games and The Lordz Games Studio and published by Slitherine Ltd., the game takes place in the 41st millennium, a time without peace, where the Imperium of Mankind is engaged in constant warfare. Players must do their best to defend the planet and take part in a detailed campaign portraying the Second War for Armageddon.

The Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon gameplay includes carrying over veteran soldiers from one scenario to another, enhancing their experience and equipment as they face various challenges. Players would join iconic characters such as Commissar Yarrick and Commander Dante, dwelling in a complex plot that evolves during the missions, adding extra depth to the storyline. You would discover hundreds of hours of gameplay packed, with the use of different difficulty settings and high replay value due to the branching campaign and numerous available scenarios. Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon allows players to guide their troops through diverse terrains such as ash wastes, volcanic canyons as well as massive Hive cities. They can command over 300 unit types representing various factions, including the Orks and different Space Marine chapters, each equipped with unique weapon systems and abilities. Detailed combat mechanics to consider include the terrain scouting, cover options and morale strength.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader



This one hits differently, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an RPG developed by Owlcat Games, known for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and was released just mere years ago on December 7th 2023. In this different title in the greater 40K Universe, players are going to embark on a thrilling adventure in the Koronus Expanse, a dangerous area of space with many opportunities for seeking profit and deep exploration aboard a giant Voidship.

As a Rogue Trader, players would have to assemble a diverse team of skilled members, including heroes, psykers and even trusty aliens, who offer their support during the battles and your personal quests. Players have the option to shape their companions' destinies while at the same time taking critical decisions that would have an impact on the game's world and characters.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
features an isometric turn-based tactical combat system, allowing players to use cover, positioning and the abilities of their companions to overcome and ultimately defeat the enemies. Players are also able to choose their path, whether to show mercy or disdain, remain loyal to the God-Emperor, or perhaps even to align with the foes of humanity. This adaptation of the classic Rogue Trader rules offers players a wide range of options to explore and loot all throughout their entire journey, but now we go to the racing tracks that the Warhammer 40K franchise has to offer.



Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks 



If you are into extreme racing full of destruction and glory, then Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is a high-energy combat racing game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe that would be just right for you! Get to drive various modified buggies, tanks and even helicopters in deadly races throughout the universe. The game intricately combines racing with exciting weapon use, is available to play online in multiplayer modes or go against bots. Unlock useful gear, customize the vehicles and make use of the new Creation Workshop to craft and share custom maps.

Developed by Caged Element and published by Wired Productions, the Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks game is still quite fresh as it got released on May 22nd 2025. It is already available on the major platforms and features cross-platform play for the option to race with friends, regardless of their platform choice.

Players can join da Speedwaaagh! alone or with their friends as they race through battle-scarred maps. This entry on the list definitely encourages creativity within the community, since there is the option to collaborate in real-time to design maps, sharing the creations in the MEK WORKSHOP. Players can also customize their Ork vehicles and pit bosses with various accessories, enhancing their gaming experience in this immersive setting of cosmic destruction derby.



Necromunda: Hired Gun



Become a mercenary in Necromunda: Hired Gun, a very fast-paced and quite the violent first-person shooter set in the dark and morbid world of Warhammer 40,000. This game's release date happened on June 1st 2021, and it was developed by Streum On Studio and published by Focus Entertainment.

As a merciless gun for hire in the Warhammer 40K Universe, you would have to navigate through the world of gruesome crimes and utter corruption, doing various contract jobs, while ensuring your survival. You are able to take out some of the most notorious gangers and mutants in the universe, for the right price and compensation of course. After all, you got access to a vast arsenal of tactical weapons and can also augment your body with the necessary customizable enhancements to finish the jobs, such as wall-running and leaping across massive gaps by using your grappling hook, which allows for swift movement through even the largest of environments.

Another incredibly useful addition is the companionship of your loyal cyber-mastiff, who will always assist you when hunting targeted enemies in more than a few ways. Necromunda: Hired Gun features an extensive array of weapon options and augmentation features that you could roll out in different setups, and you can upgrade and level up your gear by successfully collecting bounties the more you play.



Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War 



In case you are looking for a turn-based 4X strategy game set in a violent and terrifying world Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War is always a great option to try out. It is a dynamic title where four factions fight for total control over the planet's limited resources. Released quite a bit ago on July 12th 2018, by Proxy Studios and published by Slitherine Ltd., the game still holds strong positions in the fandom. The Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War gameplay takes place on Gladius Prime, a once peaceful planet but now it has gotten embroiled in a brutal war due to the awakening of ancient horrors and everybody wants a piece of the plunder.

Players can pick from 4 unique factions: Astra Militarum, Space Marines, Orks, or Necrons. Each faction coming with its own playstyle and technology tree. The title features a randomly generated world filled with special elements and dangerous wildlife that could affect troop morale. Players must make sure to secure the powerful ancient artifacts in order to gain serious advantages over their rivals or perish while trying.

To succeed, you would need to build cities, construct different types of buildings and stronghold fortifications, but most of all raise your armies as best as you can. Resource harvesting and technology research are of crucial importance for the capabilities of your military troops. Each faction has a unique storyline that progressively unfolds as players go through the game, aiming to be the last faction standing above all others.

In Warhammer 40,000: Gladius – Relics of War, players are able to command various types of weaponry, issue city edicts and carry out complex tactical operations. They can recruit hero units with special abilities and enhance them with items such as powerful grenades and dark relics. As heroes gain more and more experience, they become formidable battleground champions in the ongoing struggle for dominance on Gladius Prime.



Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters



In Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters, players are taking on the role of the Grey Knights, humanity’s most elite warriors, in a fast-paced turn-based tactical RPG. The game mainly focuses on a story-driven campaign, in which players must stop the spread of a galaxy-wide plague, simply known as the Bloom, which threatens to destroy all worlds on its way. The game got its release on May 5th 2022, and it was developed by Complex Games and published by Frontier Foundry.

Players lead the Grey Knights against the chaotic forces of evil, engaging in deadly missions to combat against the Bloom. The entire existence of the Grey Knights has actually been shrouded in mystery and governed by rules that are stricter than any other, including through memory wipes and merciless executions if need be. The storyline narrative was crafted by noted author Aaron Dembski-Bowden, providing a rich backdrop setting to the intense gameplay.

Players can upgrade their base, build new types of facilities and conduct deep research while making decisions that would impact the fate of various planet systems. They would take command over a customized squad of elite Grey Knights, each with unique skills, psychic abilities and the option to choose equipment and class. The title features a Precision Targeting system, enabling players to plan ahead and effectively execute numerous strategies, whether through ranged attacks or close-quarters combat. As players face against enemies, they must adapt to the ever-evolving challenges brought by the Bloom, which could mutate foes such as cultists and Chaos Space Marines, enhancing their abilities and attacks in new and powerful ways.

Combat in Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters is really intense and quite cinematic, with options for severe melee confrontations or long-ranged assaults. Utilizing the destructible environment to your advantage is key to gain positions over enemies, adding an extra layer of depth to the already tactical gameplay experience.



Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III



When playing Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, players can engage in tense battles among 3 rival factions on the planet Acheron, where a powerful weapon has recently been discovered. The game features the Ork warlord Gorgutz, the Eldar seer Macha, and the Space Marine commander Gabriel Angelos, all fighting for either dominance or survival amid the raging war that tears the planet.

The game allows players to control large war machines from the Warhammer universe, such as the Imperial Knight, Gorkanaut, and Wraithknight, which could significantly impact the turn of battles. Players should expect large-scale confrontations, with vast armies clashing in extreme environments, including volcanic landscapes and the enormous orbital Star Forts.

Enhance your strategies by using elite squads that possess unique abilities and other crucial bonuses. There are powerful super-abilities that could deal massive damage with ease such as the Space Marine'sOrbital Bombardment and the Eldar's Eldritch Storm, which are powerful enough to get you out of a tough situation.

Dawn of War III has a three-faction campaign that provides players with important insight into the strengths of the Space Marines, Orks, and Eldar throughout the various missions. It emphasizes greatly on the chaotic nature of the universe, where every faction must fight on its own side, without the need for any clear heroes or villains.

Online multiplayer gameplay is a key feature for this last entry on our list, during which players could join a strong community, forge alliances, or compete against each other in chaotic matches. Customization is also a significant aspect, allowing players to build their own army from the very beginning and progress through both campaign and multiplayer challenges with it.

With such a great variety of vastly entertaining options to pick from, you should definitely have already established some favorites to try out (in case you have not already played most of them). The Warhammer 40,000 franchise has made sure to deliver us with a rich plethora of exciting titles and the pace does not seem to slow down with time, but rather it actually increases as the demand for more of the brutal depths of the universe soars!
