Trading the claustrophobic Victorian mansion of the first game for a sprawling, opulent 1930s ocean liner was a bold move, but the visual execution is absolutely stunning. The art style pays a gorgeous, surreal tribute to classic Hollywood cinema, and the sound design is top-tier. Every creaking floorboard, shifting corridor, and eerie echo on the ship makes the setting feel intensely alive and oppressive. ​The thematic core is where the game really hooked me. Instead of just a standard haunted house ride, the narrative dives deep into the tragic backstory of two child stowaways. Exploring their fragmented memories and seeing their innocent "pirate" games twist into psychological horror adds a massive amount of emotional depth. It gives the beautiful, abstract environments a heavy, meaningful undertone that pulls you completely into the mystery. ​Gameplay-wise, the puzzle design is a massive highlight. I loved the clever interactive mechanics, especially the sections where you use vintage camera reels and film projectors to literally scrub back and forth through film to manifest objects and alter reality. Alongside this, the explicit decision-making moments are fantastic. Having the mysterious, booming voice of the Director bark orders at you—leaving you to decide whether to faithfully obey his script or rebel against it—adds a great layer of psychological pressure and gives your choices real weight. ​If there is one flaw, it is the "Hunt" sequences, particularly in Act 2. I absolutely hated the forced, instant-death chase sections. They tend to break the slow-burn immersion and turn a wonderfully creepy experience into a frustrating, trial-and-error sprint. ​However, Bloober Team deserves massive praise here because they included a Safe Mode. This is an absolute game-changer. It allows you to essentially kill or bypass the creature hunting you, completely removing the frustration of the chases. It shows that the developers learned how to broaden their audience, making the game incredibly accessible for anyone who just wants to soak in the brilliant story, puzzles, and 1930s setting without the stress of hardcore horror survival. ​While the original masterpiece still holds the top spot for me, this sequel is a beautifully crafted, 5-star experience. It is an atmospheric triumph that smartly accommodates all types of players, and it is a must-play for fans of narrative-driven psychological horror.
