Can 007 First Light Finally Deliver the Ultimate Bond Experience?

007 First Light is a brand-new upcoming espionage action-adventure game published and developed by the studio standing behind the beloved Hitman franchise - IO Interactive in which you would need to earn your status of a high-ranking agent and prove yourself as an able and resourceful operative to the agency in the best way you possibly can.
Originally dubbed as “Project 007”, the wait for this highly-anticipated video game experience is set to be released quite soon, on the 27th of May, 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC (via the 007 First Light Steam page), but sadly with a bit of a delay to a Summer 2026 release for the Nintendo Switch 2, and it is going to be a title that would deliver a completely standalone re-imagining of the thrilling origin story for one of the world’s most famous spy characters - James Bond.
It will allow players to step into the shoes of a young and occasionally reckless recruit in MI6's secretive training program (which you would have to ace) and you should absolutely be certain that 007 First Light is going to offer players a unique narrative-driven storyline, where we would follow Bond’s evolution from a promising, yet quite the rebellious, Royal Navy air crewman into a fully-fledged member among the most revered 00 elite agents, who is ready to do whatever it takes in order to save the world from any imminent global threat, if need be.
So, gather all of your cool gadgetry and get prepared for a YUPLAY review that covers all of the important information and details about the 007 First Light gameplay, storyline, guest appearances and soon-to-be-available versions to pick from, once it becomes available at the end of this month. We would like to urge you to not hesitate for even a second to read on and get yourself familiar with all the intel we managed to collect on this title and make sure you are ready to completely rely on your sharp instincts, charm and expertise as you move further. You have been briefed, so here is everything else we already know!
Experience the Modern-Day Version for the Origin Story of a Classic Hero
As mentioned earlier, the game's core premise revolves around Bond’s rise through the ranks at MI6 and you would have the rare opportunity to witness him start from the very beginning as a young 26-year-old recruit, all the way to him becoming a notorious spy.
Since this adaptation seems to actually be very loyal to the already established cinematic and literary legacy of the Bond franchise, you would have the ability to use any of Bond’s tricks and methods to your advantage. Throughout the development of the 007 First Light gameplay, fans of the franchise will experience numerous adventures that occur at different locations scattered all over the world, during which you would need to interact with a whole cast of trusty allies and relentless adversaries on a regular basis.
The gameplay logic for this title is designed to incorporate options for multiple strategies, thus allowing players to manage with the tough challenges through the use of either pure strength, stealthy espionage tactics or perhaps choose to exploit the most dangerous “Secret weapon” that 007 carries with him at all times, his distinct charm that is able to appeal to almost anyone standing on his way.
This is NOT Another Hitman Title, We Repeat, This is NOT Another Hitman Title
Firmly standing on top of the incredibly popular and successful Hitman series, IO Interactive has aimed to mostly leverage their extensive experience and knowledge about the making of outstanding spy games in order to deliver a truly captivating action-adventure 007 video game title that is both fresh and original, but also a refined product that is naturally being crafted with such ease due to the company’s decades of intricate work put into their main franchise, so we are certain that the teams at the studio are more than equipped with the right mindset, knowledge and capacity to implement what they have learned, while at the same time avoid the hidden pitfalls that the Hitman games have already stumbled upon in the past.
Even the CEO of IO Interactive - Hakan Abrak, has clearly emphasized on the studio’s strong commitment towards the recreation of the cinematic adventures, that we all know so well, that not only honor Bond’s rich history but also present us with a modern take on how it all started in the first place, which might just as well be possibly hinting to a whole array of 007 game series in the future, especially once things get going properly with this initial installment and the timeline commences.
It is probably at this point that we should to make sure to distinguish between what the studio has been building for so long and their new possible passion project, since there might be some confusion going on around that this is just another Hitman game, which has simply been rebranded and redecorated enough to properly fit into the world of OO7, without actually bringing anything new to the table. If anything, we are getting an evolved formula that has been recalibrated to a new direction, feel and dynamics, so let’s highlight some of the major differences, so that the message goes through loud and clear:
Unlike the often sandboxed worlds and player-driven approach to the missions in the Hitman series, this new 007 game manages to blend multiple elements and inspirations from other action and narrative-driven titles such as the fast-paced storytelling in Uncharted, borrowed shooting mechanics that could be found in Gears of War and even some of the more visceral engagements in Hellblade II, all wrapped around a James Bond themed presentation and vibe.
The 007 First Light gameplay is not entirely linear, nor is it fully happening in a sandbox, but rather a more hybrid approach has been used in this case to finely arrange frequent shifts between intense story moments and the more strategic player-driven sequences.
In the visual department, the game definitely impresses with a variety of locations — starting in Slovakia, where you would embark on your first ever field assignment at the Grand Carpathian Hotel during a global chess tournament, set against the backdrop of the beautiful High Tatra Mountains, then going through stark Icelandic landscapes and various other geographical regions, all the way to the most lavish tech industry gala event hosted in Kensington. All of the levels are coming paired with a beautiful orchestral score, further enhancing the inclusion of a more cinematic structural element in the game. The story unfolds progressively, with segments of narrative-driven linear movement and episodes of open sandboxes where players can choose how to approach the objectives.
Stealth is emphasized as the preferred style of gameplay in the game, while the messier all-out gun battles are strongly discouraged, unless there is no other way around the situation and a direct confrontation has already been provoked. Players are actually encouraged to quietly eliminate their enemies by using the variety of nifty tools such as sleep darts and hacking devices all of which are completely integrated into Bond’s multi-purpose watch.
Another interesting aspect of the 007 First Light release are the more social stealth interactions, where Bond has the option to bluff the guards by fabricating deceptive stories, which could be somewhat borrowing elements reminiscent of the disguise mechanic in the Hitman games, but with a very unique twist that is more fitting to the 007’s charismatic personality and character.
The 007 First Light release aims to position itself as a new and more up-to-date technological take on the spy games genre that puts a strong emphasis on the far more versatile gameplay potentials, while actively steering away from fully adopting the Hitman formula type. So, in order to strengthen these concepts even more, the upcoming Bond game has a title sequence of its own, just like a movie belonging to the franchise would, that features an original theme song (in this case appropriately titled First Light, which has been composed by Lana Del Rey and David Arnold).
Recently we got a promotional trailer for the game that introduced the "Rules of Spycraft", which would be a major factor that determines whether or not the younger version of James Bond gets his 00 status secured and it definitely demonstrates the game's focus on a more stand-out creative gameplay setup, that would allow players to approach the objectives differently with their own unique strategies, all while still remaining deeply rooted in the spy-thriller expertise that IO Interactive has managed to garner and refine.
Players would be able to utilize a vast selection of core gameplay mechanics to their advantage and these include the following:
Spycraft - You could decide to infiltrate certain areas by carefully observing their surroundings, eavesdropping for additional intel and rely on stealth, in order to navigate through the more heavily secured regions of the map without alerting the guards and defense systems.
Then come the gadgets designed by Q: Players have the option to customize their loadout with useful tools that could be used for various means and even cause a much-needed distraction, if necessary! These include:
- The Q Lens: Detects useful information stacks and hackable devices around you.
- The Q Watch: Used to activate several gadgets to divert attention or neutralize threats with more precision.
- The Laser Strap: Could be of great importance when it comes to situations in which you would have to daze your enemies or promptly create environmental distractions.
- The Dart Phone: You could rely on this tool to quietly neutralize enemies and by doing so to prevent them from engaging in certain encounters.
- The Smoke Pod: Provides you with a visibility cover that can be vital to your survival in the more open spaces.
- The Flash Mine: Has the capacity to temporarily stun the opponents with a sudden burst of light.
Combat mechanics – In case stealth fails or is not an option in the first place, players may resort to strategic combat, by fully using the environment for planned ambushes, seizing the opportunities for quicker takedowns, or when choosing to go for the very practical Focus mechanic and slow down time to strike with greater precision. Weapons can also be thrown and used for effective distractions when they run out of ammo.
Additionally, players can choose to engage in the Tactical Simulation (TecSim) mode post-training. It is located in an enclosed MI6 area with interactive elements to sharpen your skills even more. The TecSIm facility is spearheaded by Dr. Selina Tan and enables players to simulate replays of specific missions, improving on their scores at the global leaderboards, thus earning extra experience points and crucial intel that would unlock new weapon and gadget skins as well as unique cosmetics. The Tactical Simulation missions contribute to your overall Agent Score, further expanding on the replayability factor, but also your greater in-game skills development.
Real-Life Stars Enter the World of James Bond
While navigating through the missions, you are most certainly going to stumble upon some possibly familiar faces from the entertainment industry and the 007 First Light release does not shy away at the number of celebrity cameos, so here we are going through some of the stars the likes of which you are going to spot during your missions!
Among the more exciting featured guests in the game is the collaboration with renowned drum and bass duo Chase & Status, who bring their musical prowess directly into the club scene of 007 First Light. Their music would enhance the already very intense part of the story, effectively integrating a bunch of not-so-small particles from the contemporary pop-culture into the gameplay, thereby connecting Bond’s classy character a few steps closer to the modern world.
Furthermore, Dimitri Vegas, another superstar DJ, joins the in-game experience as well, adding another layer to the cultural depth of the storyline when players get to encounter his character during the expansive missions.
Last, but most certainly NOT least comes the inclusion of no other than Mr. Lenny Kravitz as he joins the main part of the cast for the role of The Pirate King Bawma. Being his first ever role in a video game the popular singer would provide the voice and likeness for the influential leader of a powerful black-market arms network named Aleph. His ambitious tale also got featured during the dramatic trailer reveal at The Game Awards, showcasing him in a tense encounter with James Bond and his MI6 mentor John Greenway, bringing the stakes of the narrative even higher as the production team sends an important nod towards present-day piracy and the ongoing arms trade and black market deals.
No James Bond material of any sort goes without a special set of wheels for the intense chase scenes or escape routes and 007 First Light is no exception to the tradition, as players are going to ride in style with the Aston Martin Valhalla supercar, which is a model known for its tight steering precision, turbo-charged power and exquisite elegance. This car model combines the advanced Formula 1 state-of-the-art engineering practices with a luxurious design and is actually limited to just 999 units ever to be produced, so we could safely say that it is a true collectable rarity in the real world. In this James Bond game however, players would experience the Valhalla first-hand as they navigate through the segment of high-stakes missions that require it on the road.
Game Editions, Pre-Order Options and Planned Future Updates
Even though 007 First Light will not include any sort of multiplayer experience or modes, since the developers have solely focused on crafting the best single-player experience they could possibly deliver, there would still be regular future additions with post-launch extra content, but details about that are still to be shared at the moment of writing this article.
Pre-orders are currently available through the designated 007 First Light Steam page, offering players the opportunity to secure a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition, which includes 24-hour Early Access and exclusive in-game skins and outfits inspired by some of the classic 007 themes and a variety of gadget skins included in it.
The outfits that are available in the Deluxe Edition include: Day of the Dead, Desert Explorer, Silent Anchor and Gentleman Operator, along with a special weapon skin codenamed Agent’s Mark as well as a sweet collection of Gleaming Pack, that includes 4 gadget skins: Gleaming Lighter, Gleaming Earphones, Gleaming Dart Gun and the Gleaming Pen.
A Collector’s Edition of the game is also available for pre-order, it features the full game and the 007 First Light Deluxe Edition content, plus even more unique collectible items such as the Obsidian Gold Suit outfit, a wearable mask replica, a Certificate of Authenticity and a special Steel Case paired with a magnet.
Finally, for the ultimate collectors among you, there is the highest-ticket 007 First Light - Legacy Edition, which is also already available for pre-order on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC. It includes a copy of the full game, the Deluxe Edition content, an Exclusive Golden Gun weapon skin, the Obsidian Gold Suit outfit, a Golden Gun Figurine coming with a Stand & Secret Compartment, a Certificate of Authenticity and a Steel Case with a magnet as well. Please note that Pre-orders on Nintendo Switch 2 are limited to physical editions only and would generally be done later during the summer period of this year!
When speaking of the hardware requirements to run 007 First Light smoothly at 1440p and 4K, these details will be revealed closer to the launch date of May 27th. Up to now it is known that the game will release with an uncapped framerate and utilize NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, providing excellent image quality and smooth performance across its versions from the very start of its availability cycle. Additional visual enhancements like path tracing are going to be added a bit later in the Summer 2026 season.
With such a rich legacy behind him, 007 is a cultural phenomenon that has withstood the tests of time, format and appropriation that only prove how resilient the character truly is and still carries the full license to kill proudly as a reminder for other legends to reach higher as time goes by. It only shows that when well-thought-out projects, IPs and the right companies align together, as they typically should, there is barely anything that could stop the world’s leading elite MI6 spy in his tracks. No matter the number of reinventions and talented men that have taken on the role, there is still enough space for 007 in our reality, more than 70 years after Ian Fleming laid the foundation for this iconic hero of the world.
Heading forward, we are expecting many new and interesting titles to review and reflect on, as well as the heated summer promos to kick in soon, so be sure to stay on the lookout for new YUPLAY blog posts and price-crushing campaigns in the coming weeks!
